'Interbau' 72x72cm, Acrylic on Board, 2023

An original painting by Elliott Packham, made using acrylic paint and finished in a protective satin varnish, inspired by a 1950s tower block in Berlin, Germany. 
 
The painting shows building’s façade, which contains asymmetrical apartments arranged in a seemingly random, yet cohesive grid. Despite being an elevation, shadows created by more deeply sunken windows, as well as the interior blinds and curtains, create a sense of depth, pulling some areas of the composition towards the viewer, and pushing others away. 
 
The title of the work, Interbau, is named after the architectural exhibition that took place in West Berlin in 1957 of the same name. Interbau brought together over 50 renowned architects from 14 countries, including Alvar Aalto, Le Corbusier, Oscar Niemeyer and Walter Gropius with the aim of solving the huge housing shortage the city was facing. The result was the reconstruction of a district that had been badly damaged by the second world war, called Hansaviertal, with each architect designing a building each. 
 
The painting is based on one of the residential tower blocks from Hansaviertal (Bartingallee 11-13), using colours inspired by archive photographs of the building at the time of construction (it’s since been painted blue!).
 
Dimensions, Weight and Hanging
 
The paintings’ dimensions are 72x72cm (or 28.35 x 28.35in) and it is painted on a solid sheet of 9mm medium density fibreboard (MDF).
